Do ab workouts help you build a 6-pack? This is a dilemma that has perplexed bodybuilders for generations.

So what is the answer?

I’ve you listen to most of the bodybuilding forums online, almost everyone will tell you not to train your abs individually.

Well, guess what? Arnold Schwarzenegger trained his abs individually.  Was he wrong?

Are you more cut than Arnold Schwarzenegger?

Personally, I have tried working out my abs every single day and I have also tried not training them at all.

I find that it helps to train them.

Don’t get me wrong, heavy squats, leg press, deadlifts and overhead lifts will train your abs better than any crunch or sit up, but I feel that it still helps to train them individually.

The real main key in building a 6-pack is to get your body fat percentage low.

I see guys in the gym all the time spending time training their abs, when in reality, they will never get a 6-pack at their current body fat.

Without getting lean, your abs will never show.

You need to lift weights

You need to do cardio

And you need to diet

Overall, when you train your abs correctly and you diet down your body fat, if should look something like this.

It was pretty warm this weekend, but now this week it is starting to rain again.  I am not a big fan of the extreme heat, and when it gets to July and August I like to run a little bit later at night, but I am glad to see the seasons changing.

My next big race looks to be the Wall St run coming up in the middle of June.  This will be my 5th year in a row running it, so I’d like to put in a decent time.

The other big news is that I recently moved to the Rockaways in Queens from Brooklyn, NY!!!  For the last couple weeks I have been having second thoughts about moving here, but Memorial Day weekend convinced me that it is a great place to live.

Check out this picture from outside my apartment!

I was training great until the middle of May, when I decided to take an extra Insurance class for work.  Needless to say, I passed the state test on the first try! But I also unfortunately missed out on about 3 days of running.

I also went to the Preakness Stakes this weekend in Baltimore, and missed ANOTHER weekend of running.  Today I decided that I need to get back on track, and I finally got outside for a real strong run.

Memorial Day is usually my official start of summer, but it looks like it will (again) rain this weekend.  So far I have cut down from a peak of 182lb’s in the winter, to around 162 last week.  I decided not to use a scale this year, and I am only using the mirror as my guide. Just from the way I look, I will probably lose another 5-7 lb’s and peak around July 4th.

Hoping to sign up for some good runs this summer and finally go under 20 minutes for the 5K.

Good luck everyone!

It looks like my two favorite runs of the summer have been just announced!!

The first is the Coney Island Sports Foundation 5K which is on Sunday, June 29.  This race takes place on the Coney Island boardwalk in Brooklyn, and I love jumping in the water afterwards and having a couple beers.

My 2nd favorite is the Fire Island Run for Rose 5k, which will be on Sunday, August 10th.  This race snakes through the tiny streets of Ocean Bay Park and Ocean Bay, Fire Island.   Similar to the Coney Island Run, it usually ends with a huge party : )

Here is a picture of me running it last summer and refusing water!

So today I ran what I would consider my first official 5K of the season in 20:40!  My goal for this year is to break into the teens for the 5k, that is a time that I haven’t run since I was in College.

Long-distance running is a weird sport, I’ve been training a little big harder in the last 18 months, and I’m almost as fast as I was 20 years ago.

I believe my next race is on Mothers Day weekend, I am not sure if I will go under 20 minutes by then, but I am getting in striking distance.

Looking for some new races on the East coast if anyone has any suggestions!
