I like the summer, but I don’t enjoy the oppressive heat.

I am more of an early Fall, late Spring type of guy.

When it is too Hot (July) or too cold (January), sometimes I just don’t feel like doing anything.

Today I woke up planning on running outside at 9 am.  It is supposed to reach 98 degrees today in NYC, so I figured I would get ahead of the curve and go for a nice morning run.

Of course my son decides to sleep in late and then he wanted two hours straight of play time.

After play time we realized that he was out of food, so then we had to drive up to the supermarket and back.

By the time I made it outside it was 12:30 pm and around 98 degrees out.

I actually felt “OK”.  The first mile went by quickly in 6:15 but after I started the 2nd mile (which is on a hill) I had to stop.

It was just too hot out.  About 3/4 into a large hill I was starting to get dizzy and that’s when I decided to pull the plug and start walking.

When I was 21-years old, I would just plow right through a workout like this and complete it a near death.

Not that I am in my late 30’s, I would rather live to fight another day.  I can just run a hard one tomorrow and not sweat as much.

Overall, I don’t love running outside in July.  Even though it is the warmest month of the year and the least amount of rain, it just isn’t fun for me.

August gets a “little bit” better, especially late August around Labor Day.  And then of course my favorite time of year to run, The Fall.

Sept, Oct and November are the absolute best times of year to run outside.  I usually finish my season with a big race in the Fall before I start bulking up and power lifting for the Winter.

One big change I want to make this year, is that I want to “force” myself to get out more in July,  Although I am not enjoying myself as much and it can be very uncomfortable, if I can survive 30 days of training, it should help me run a fast race in the Fall.

I am going away on vacation next week, and I think I may try to run 4 or 5 times outside.

It’s going to be tough, but it helps to keep my lean, I get a suntan and I should be able to bust out a fast time in the next couple month

This was a wild year.  Last summer I trained super hard, got my body weight down to 149 lbs and I was insanely ripped.

This year was different.

I was so insanely burnt out from last year’s training, that I ended up  taking off almost 6-7 months  from any type of cardio.  Although it felt good to rest my body, the only problem is that I put on some body fat.

Usually, I can cut the body fat down after 10-12 weeks of cardio and dieting, but this year was challenging.  My first child was born in April and my spring training was cut down right in the middle of it.

I only really missed 3 or 4 workouts, but overall, mentally I was out of it for 2 months.

Around July 4th, I honestly thought I was in big trouble.  I was still at 160 lbs and I wasn’t running or lifting good.

Fortunately, two good things happened.

A) I finally got a good training partner.  This really helped for going heavy in the gym

B) I got some of my free time back to go hard with the cardio.

Recently, I was able to get down to 150 lbs and was almost able to reach last summers ultra low body weight.  I was planning on going under 150 this coming weekend, but the hurricane in Florida killed my plans.

My wife and I had booked a trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina, but today we had to cancel.  Instead we are going upstate to Lake George and Lake Placid, where it has been reaching 39 degrees at night.

Going to train hard the next couple days, but I think my season is officially over.

Here are some pics..

And some more…

There is a slight chance that I might improve in the next 14 days, but to be honest, I doubt it.  It is going to be too cold for me to tan and I know that I wont be eating good on my vacation.

As most of you already know, this week was the summer solstice and now we are officially into summer.

As I have stated before, if you haven’t started losing weight yet, you probably aren’t going to look good this summer.

I have cut down from 176 lbs in the winter down to 156!  I plan on losing another 6 lbs and maxing out at 150 lb’s.

Right now I am focusing hard on diet and cardio.  I am trying my best to get at least 3-4 hard cardio sessions in a week and I am also trying my best not to cheat on my diet.

This year I am peaking slightly later in the Summer than the last several years and I should look my best in the middle of August.

I know I have posted an pictures in a long time, but I should have some new one’s after July 4th weekend.

The only thing I am really missing now is a solid tan.

Skin cancer aside, a good tan is very important and unfortunately, nothing is better than the actual sun.

When I get really tan, my skin starts to shrink around my muscles like plastic wrap.

This year I might get a solid base tan from the sun, then I will finish it off with a spray tan.

It’s been hard to get outside this year.  Besides working two jobs and an infant at home, I just don’t have time in my day to sit outside and work on my tan.

Hopefully I can get outside more in the next couple weeks.

Although, I don’t except to make any strength gains at my light body weight, I do expect to improve in my cardio times.

For example, today I ran 1 1/2 miles in 9:45 (6:33 per mile pace)

I would love to get that under 9 minutes and get my mile under 6.

How is everyone else doing?

P.S. I have my 2nd book coming out within the next 2 weeks!

It was pretty warm this weekend, but now this week it is starting to rain again.  I am not a big fan of the extreme heat, and when it gets to July and August I like to run a little bit later at night, but I am glad to see the seasons changing.

My next big race looks to be the Wall St run coming up in the middle of June.  This will be my 5th year in a row running it, so I’d like to put in a decent time.

The other big news is that I recently moved to the Rockaways in Queens from Brooklyn, NY!!!  For the last couple weeks I have been having second thoughts about moving here, but Memorial Day weekend convinced me that it is a great place to live.
